The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, on Thursday in Abuja said the party would not be intimidated by what he called the "propaganda’’ of opposition party APC. In a statement made available to newsmen, Metuh said PDP would continue to enjoy the support of Nigerians "in spite of negative propaganda against it by the opposition’’. "The operators of the APC want to unleash their personal frustrations on Nigerians. However, they should note that Nigerians are peaceful and loving people. "We will remain one nation and Nigerians will continue to go with the PDP, irrespective of the lies and propaganda unleashed by the APC,’’ it quoted Metuh as saying. The statement said Metuh expressed optimism that the PDP would "remain on top and would win the 2015 general elections, no matter the antics of the APC’’. "The election is not going to be conducted in the media. It is not going to be based on how many insults you hauled at your opponents. "It is all about people who are peaceful and loving and have the best agenda for Nigeria,’’ the statement further quoted Metuh as saying.

INEC urges voters to visit polling units to ascertain registration status

  

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Thursday in Abuja advised
registered voters in 10 states on what they  needed to do to ascertain their registration status. A statement signed by Kayode Idowu, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman , the commission
advised them to visit the polling units where they previously registered to ascertain their status. The voters are those in the 10 states under Phase One distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs). The statement said the advice was important as the PVCs distribution would hold from Friday, May
23 to Sunday, May 25. It listed the concerned states as Taraba, Gombe, Zamfara, Kebbi, Benue, Kogi, Abia, Enugu, Akwa- Ibom and Bayelsa. "Persons whose data have been appropriately captured will be handed their PVCs at the polling units in accordance with set procedures. "Those with defective data, for whom PVCs have not been produced, will have the opportunity to re-register during the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) which holds from May 28 to June 1,’’ the statement said. It said that there would be a display of the valid register of voters at the polling units where the PVCs would be distributed. "It is, thus, important for every voter to visit his/ her polling unit within the time frame to ascertain his/her registration status. "This is contrary to suggestions that persons in so-called `zero polling units’ need not show up,’’ the statement said. It added that the CVR was for the categories of persons who turned 18 years after the last registration. "It is also for persons who were 18 years at the time but did not present themselves for registration. "Furthermore, the CRV is also for persons whose data were not adequately captured previously and for whom PVCs had not been produced,’’ the statement said. It however cautioned that the exercise was not for everyone, including people wishing to transfer their registration data from where they previously registered. "Those persons whose data were not adequately captured previously and those whom PVCs had not been produced should be calm and represent themselves for registration during the CVR, to have their status regularised,’’ the statement said.

Malawi's President Joyce Banda on Saturday went on radio to declare this week's chaotic election "null and void," throwing the impoverished nation into crisis.Banda has claimed there were "serious irregularities" with the poll, saying people had voted multiple times, ballots had been tampered with, presiding officers arrested, and the computerised voter counting system collapsed.

African leaders to discuss kidnapped girls

Pretoria - African leaders in Pretoria for President Jacob Zuma's inauguration will hold informal talks on the security situation in Nigeria, South Africa's government said on Saturday.

President Goodluck Jonathan is among more than 20 heads of state gathered for the event.

Government spokesman Clayson Monyela said they would meet to discuss security in Nigeria, where the kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls has laid bare the government's inability to tackle an insurgency by the Islamist group Boko Haram.

The talks follow a spate of attacks in Nigeria, which is under growing international pressure to tackle the increasingly bloody uprising.

Nigerian Army Begins recruitment of Volunteer Army Personnel

 

According to a report by Channels TV, the Nigerian army has announced the recruitment of volunteer soldiers that will serve in the search for the missing Chibok girls as well as help in the fight against Boko Haram insurgence. In a press briefing today, the Director of Public Affairs said the recruitment exercise will end on June 21st and is open to only able bodied persons.
